Since you enjoyed our last list, 3 Completely Free Afternoons Out in Manchester, we thought we’d follow up with a second list of more fun things to get up to in Manchester & Salford without spending a penny.

Science and Industry Museum (MOSI)

Tracing the historical development of science, technology and industry in Manchester, visiting MOSI can truly be an eye-opening and mind-blowing experience.

If you didn’t know, Manchester has had huge significance in scientific and technological advancements during the past 100 years. For example, the electron, proton and neutron were all discovered by scientists educated or born in Manchester.

In MOSI, you can learn so much about our city in no time. There are many exhibits on the history of Manchester, with interesting items and artefacts on display that date back to the industrial revolution. It’s surreal to see how far our city has come from cotton mills and textile production, and there’s no where better to dive into Manchester’s past.

Imperial War Museum North (IWM North)

The first Imperial War Museum in the north of England, people travel from all over to see the extraordinary exhibitions and feel an award-winning immersive experience.

The harsh reality of diplomacy and war is shocking and IWM North explores thousands of untold stories from WW1 and WW2. There are over 800,000 items in the museum: ranging from authentic vehicles and tanks, military fatigues, badges, weaponry and pretty much anything that survived the years of war.

IWM North want to change your perspective on world-shaping events and therefore recommend spending over 2 hours in the facility. They say that immersion is the only way to fully comprehend the magnitude and impact of these times on the world. Manchester Craft and Design Centre (MCAD)

For almost 40 years, Manchester Craft & Design Centre has provided a home to some of the north’s best independent designers. Far from a basic shopping trip, explore the 20 studios inside which sell all kinds of homemade textiles, jewellery, accessories, ceramics, glass, prints and homeware. Even if you’re not purchasing, it can be a fun day out, speaking with passionate people about their wonderful work.

It’s not just the customer they look out for, its the creative. For aspiring artists and makers, they offer a place to hone your skills, speak with experienced craftsmen and sell your merchandise.

In MCAD’s words, ‘We nurture and develop emerging talent.’

Open from Monday to Saturday, 10am – 5.30pm, add that special bit of decoration to your home and venture to the Northern Quarter today.
